В этом фильме он находит очень удачное решение, выбрав предметом экранизации роман, драматургия которого, при всей своей классичности (несмотря на раздробленность воспоминаний), построена на событии чрезвычайно распространенном, но никогда не рассматривавшемся в кинематографе напрямую: автомобильной катастрофе. В более поздних работах Соте (Сезар и Розали, Cesar et Rosalie, 1972; Венсан, Франсуа, Поль и другие, Vincent, Francois, Paul et les autres, 1974; Maдо, Mado, 1976) количество персонажей будет расти, каждый будет привносить с собой в сюжет новую, дополнительную проблему и новую конфликтную ситуацию, характерную для современных отношений между полами. Мало-помалу из этих фильмов складывается мозаика современного общества, где режиссерское «я» проявляется минимально. Только в фильм Макс и жестянщики, Max et les ferrailleurs, 1971 Соте решился вложить большую частицу себя, что, на наш взгляд, сделало фильм только привлекательнее.
